Rabbit Nutrition: Food and Fun

Who wouldn't want a fun job that involves traveling to different beautiful locations?

Eating is a significant part of every rabbit's life. Why? Food is both a source of nutrition that keeps the rabbit healthy and also provides hours of enjoyment for your rabbit each day. When choosing the perfect food for your rabbit, keep this fact in mind. Food should be nutritious and fun!

· Pellets. The majority of your rabbit's diet should be made up of pellets. They should be fresh and made up of at least 18% fiber. Avoid purchasing large quantities of pellets for your rabbit as the freshness will not keep for a long period of time. Pellets also need to be very low in protein - as little as 15%.

· Hay. Your rabbit will also benefits from a continuous supply of hay. Hay provides roughage that your rabbit needs to help keep its digestive system on track. It helps reduce the danger of hair balls and other blockages that may be detrimental to your rabbit's health. Hay is also where the enjoyment comes in. Your rabbit will spend hours each day sorting and picking through hay. Foraging is a natural behaviour and an activity a rabbit would don the wild. To encourage your rabbit to forage in his hay why not try sprinkling a few treats in there, or stuffing the hay into rabbit friendly toys such as a willow ball. Your rabbit will have great fun playing like this.

· Treats. Everyone enjoys a treat every now and then! This will be true for your rabbit as well. It is commonly known that rabbits have a sweet tooth. Choose to feed your tasty treats including chopped up vegetables and fruit. Fibre rich rabbit snacks sold in your pet shop are also suitable. Avoid feeding your rabbit too much sugar as it will begin refusing the more nutritious food in exchange for sweet foods. The healthiest treats will be fresh fruits and vegetables. Be sure that you rabbit has a healthy supply of fruits and vegetables daily.

Something to avoid...!

· Muesli. Muesli has been traditionally sold as the ideal, complete food for rabbits and other fibrevores. Nothing could be further from the truth! Muesli may include some healthy elements (if you are lucky) but it is also laden with sugary treats that whilst being tasty are not nutritious and could, in the long term, damage your rabbits health. Muesli is also not good for your rabbit's teeth. Rabbits need to gnaw on long fibre which they can do with hay and grass, but not from a bowl of sugary seeds and grains.

Food will be important in your rabbit's life not only for nutrition but also for physical activity and exercise. Use the tips above to help choose a balanced diet for your pet that will also add in a little fun. Pellets, hay, and fresh fruits and veggies should make up the majority of your rabbit's diet. What is your rabbit's diet made up of? Is it eating for nutrition and fun?Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/6712100
